Proposals and Alternatives: Organic ProductionA socially just and ecologically healthy alternative to the conventional methods of production, which respects our campesina (rural farmer) culture and indigenous traditions has been developing in Costa Rica. Small farmers and indigenous peoples have experiences with organic agriculture that date back many hundreds of years ago. For example, these producers know of more than 200 plants that act as natural pesticides and protect the crops without harming the environment. This alternative method of production respects the logic of nature, in which there is a combination of many different plants and organisms, as opposed to the cultivation of a monocrop, in which all other plants and organisms are destroyed. Foro Emaús believes that this method of production should be an alternative to the conventional method of banana production, which violates the logic of nature and which robs human beings of their dignity, rights, and culture. For this reason, Foro Emaús promotes and aids this alternative method of production.
