Socioeconomic Problems: Women WorkersWomen play an active role in the production of bananas. Yet they must assume two jobs: the first as a worker in the banana plantations and the second as a mother, wife, and housekeeper within their families, most of whom also work in the plantations. Poverty is the main problem that affects them and it is made worse due to the fact that, among other things, the work not only pays poorly, but is temporary, depending on the size of the harvest at any given moment. In addition, they must work irregular schedules, long, extensive work days, and they receive less pay than men for the same type of work. After this they must return home to fulfill their domestic duties as mothers and wives. Often these “banana women” are the managers of their households, in which the conditions are much more vulnerable and difficult.
